Happy Hour March 18 2011

Our Happy Hour this month will be March 18, 6PM till whenever, at Steve & Marcia’s (Prez and Sec/Membership Dir) house. Email Steve/Marcia or Mike for directions. Since the next two months are going to be big events for us – April 15 Birthday Bash and May 28 Buffett Concert – we decided to go more low key for March. However in preparation for the Birthday Bash, we will be putting together a Music City Phins Basket to raffle off. So, bring your favorite Nashville or Parrothead item to donate to the basket, some drinks and snacks to share and we will put it together over a few cocktails while listening to Buffett tunes. As usual at our monthly Happy Hour we will also accept donations for our “Pennies & Pop Tops For Patients” fund.

Parties That Matter is a charitable organization (run by a phlock of parrotheads) that has donated over $50,000 since 2007 to a host of causes through charity tailgate parties. Based in Dallas, Texas, Parties That Matter was officially founded and recognized as a charitable organization in 2009 and donates their proceeds to a number of charities including the Alzheimer’s Foundation, The National Breast Cancer Foundation, The Wendy L Fugitt Memorial Fund to benefit research in Amyloidosis as well as many individuals who find them selves facing life threatening diseases and limited or no means to fight back. For more information on Parties That Matter and the causes they support, check them out on the web at www.partiesthatmatter.org.

Joining together the charitable spirit of the Parrot Head Nation along with the same profound charitable spirit of the NASCAR Nation, NASCARitaville.com and Parties That Matter have a goal to bring attention to and strengthen their efforts by further joining the two fan bases that are already rooted together. The organization is hoping for a top ten finish this year. Their first Sponsafier entry in 2010 garnered a 29th placed finish among over 75,000 entries. The goal this year is to crack the top ten. Parties That Matter plans on auctioning off all prizes that they may win from the Sponsafier entry to fund future charitable efforts.

The Toyota Sponsafier contest is open for voting. You may vote once every 24 hours. If you are looking for a great cause and a cool car to see on the track check out NASCARitaville Parties That Matter Racing Team and maybe you’ll also be “Racing Away Again In NASCARitaville!”

Buffett and Chesney perform at ForEverGlades Foundation Benefit

The rumours of Jimmy Buffett’s recent injury being more serious than he let pholks think are, as Mark Twain said about rumours of his own death, “greatly exaggerated” :-) On Friday night Feb 18, 2011 (25 days after falling off of a stage in Austrailia injuring his head and arm) Jimmy made a guest appearance on stage with Kenny Chesney at the ForEverGlades Foundation Benefit in Palm Beach, Florida. Although Jimmy’s right elbow was still bandaged he seemed very happy to be on stage strumming his guitar and singing. More pictures can be found at this link.

A big PHINS UP! and best wishes for a continued speedy recovery to ya Jimmy!!!

(ps, We’ve ‘cleaned this place up’ so when ya ‘comin’ back to town?’)

Video message from Jimmy Buffett

As you probably know Jimmy fell off of the stage while performing in Sydney, Australia Jan 25th and injured his head. He was stitched up and spent the night in a hospital for observation. He has been released from the hospital and seems to be recovering well and is in good spirits. He does not talk about it in the video, but, as Nadirah mentions, I would expect there to be a song come out of this incident.

Here are some Facebook msgs posted by some of the Coral Reefers:
Uncle Jim Mayer (bass):

Band is heading on to New Zealand as planned. We’ll be in place so we’re ready to go if Jimmy is up for the show. Latest is he is doing well. Thanks for all your thoughts! (New Zealand show later cancelled – Mike)

Nadirah Shakoor (vocals):

Thank you everyone for your kind words and concern for JB I will pass them on to him. We are all still a bit shaken but you know JB he’s already writing a song about it.

Peter Mayer (guitar):

Thanks for your best wishes, prayers and comments. While we’re sad to cancel the show in Auckland, it’s the best thing. Jimmy is resting up. He was very fortunate to not have had worse injuries from his fall. He’s tough, he bounces and he’ll be back soon.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and Phins Up back at’cha Jimmy!!!
